Dodging the McDonald's Bullet

An amazing thing happened tonight.

We have a reward chart for all of the kids in our house: Artichoke, Zucchini and Rudy.  Yes, the dog is included because he has to behave too!  For every 5 stickers, you get a magic straw.  For those of you not in the know, this is a magic straw.  Then when your entire chart is filled (25 stickers), you get a big treat!  A big treat could be a movie night complete with pizza, or a trip to the library, or a new toy, or dinner at a restaurant, or whatever else keeps you motivated to behave!

Artichoke filled up his chart today!  This was a big accomplishment for him and I should have been excited.  I should have been happy to celebrate good behavior.  But his treat was going to eat at McDonald's since he talks about this all. the. time.  And I'm not a big fan of McDonald's.  Actually, I don't really like McDonald's at all.  So all day I was dreading dinner because I just didn't want to eat a plate full of grease just to feel icky for the rest of the night.

But then on my way home, I got a text from Artichoke's cousin's mom asking us if we wanted to join them at a local Mexican spot.  Please note her son isn't actually Artichoke's cousin.  He is a very, very good friend.  Such a good friend that Artichoke thinks that best friend just doesn't do their friendship justice.  So he decided to call him his cousin.

Anyway, this made me WAY too excited that there was hope that we wouldn't end up at McDonald's after all.  So we asked Artichoke "Do you want to go to McDonald's for dinner?  Or do you want to go eat Mexican with your cousin?"  We should have seen his response coming.  "I want to go to McDonald's with my cousin."  "That's not an option."  "Okay, then I would like to eat Mexican with my cousin."  Woohoo!

I'm still in disbelief that we were able to dodge the McDonald's bullet.  Hopefully his cousin will be available every time that McDonald's is on the menu!
